In 2006, the Yorktown Police Department acquired two new police dogs. Police K-9′s Caesar and Moose completed an extensive certification program with police officer handlers Jason Swart and Justin Foley. Officers Swart and Foley took over for Detective Patsy Perrotto and Sergeant John Deiulio as the Department K-9 handlers. Tragically, K-9 Caesar was laid to rest in 2012 after battling a serious illness. He served the Department and the residents of Yorktown with great skill and commitment. He was a tremendous asset to the Department and a loyal friend and partner to Officer Swart.
The Department currently maintains a K-9 Unit comprised of one patrol dog and officer handler. The psychological deterrence to crime, superior speed, and scenting abilities of K-9’s is used in support of the patrol and investigative functions to apprehend offenders, recover evidence, and improve officer safety within the Department.
The large geographical and wooded terrain of Yorktown has proven to be a challenge in locating persons. Police dogs have been used to great advantage in searching for lost person(s). The Yorktown Police K-9 unit is frequently requested by neighboring police agencies throughout Westchester and Putnam counties.
